How do garage door actuators work?

Garage door actuators are based on automatic movement. Types of garage door actuators

Types of garage door actuators are distinguished on the basis of significant differences in the context of pulling power, adaptation to the surface of the garage door, type of drive or possible intensity of operation of the device. However, individual modifications of settings allow personalized adjustment of the drive to the place of its use and individual conditions.

How to choose a drive for the type of garage door?

A garage door drive should be matched to the size and weight of the door itself. You should also take into account the fact what type of garage door you have chosen, because some of them do not leave much space for mounting the drive, so it is very important to discern in advance, measure everything well and think it over.

The easiest way to choose a drive for a sectional garage door is to choose a drive, because virtually all types of drives fit it. In the case of an overhead garage door, the only requirement is enough space to install the drive itself. As for side sectional garage doors, we need to equip them with a special arm (mounted on the side wall or above the lintel of the opening) that allows it to be pulled.

Among the not very complicated is also the selection of actuators for overhead garage doors. When buying a garage door operator of this type, we should pay attention first of all to its parameters - traditional models, with adequate power, or garage door operators specially adapted to this type of gates will work well here. The latter are almost invisible.

The most difficult task is to match the garage door drive to the roller door. A traditional drive attaches arms that pull or push the leaves, but they can only be installed on gates that are less than 2.8 meters wide. In this case, it is worth betting on the help of a professional, who - after learning the specifics of our garage door - will propose the best solution.

An important aspect when choosing a garage door mechanism is also ease of use. After all, usually the garage is directly adjacent to some part of the apartment, so choosing, for example, a chain drive may generate too much noise. A much better solution will then be a garage door drive with a Kevlar belt, which is much quieter during operation. You should also pay attention to the presence of photocells, which are one of the key aspects in terms of preventing garage door accidents.

Safety mechanisms in a garage door

Every automatic garage door should have the ability to open in an emergency in case of, for example, a power outage or failure of any of the components. Random situations are quite common, so proper security of automatic garage doors should be a priority issue for any owner of an automated garage.

In the event of a malfunction, it is necessary to decouple the door opener, that is, disconnect the drive from the garage door leaf. This is possible thanks to a special cable attached to the arm or carriage of the drive; by pulling the cable you open the garage door manually, from the inside. The decoupling mechanism can also be operated by means of a connected handle with a special insert, which is located on the outside of the door. Provision of such a handle makes it possible to open the gate in an emergency also from the outside, which is especially useful if the garage does not have an additional entrance.

Both garage door actuators and entire drives are additionally equipped with elements that protect their operation. These include overload protection, which is designed to stop or reverse the direction of the garage door when it encounters an obstacle during movement.

Also used are so-called garage door edge protections, which are strips mounted to the edge of the door leaf that have special optical sensors. The principle of operation is the same as in the case of overload protection - if during the movement of the leaf the sensor detects an obstacle in the light of the gate, it will send an appropriate signal to the control panel, which will then stop or reverse the direction of the gate.

Various types of photocells and light grilles are ideal here - depending on your needs and how you want to secure the gate. And electronic limit switches stop the movement of the garage door when it approaches the end position, and stop it exactly at the end point.

Vertically opening gates should also have a special mechanism to prevent the leaf from suddenly falling due to damage to any of the drive components. The system blocks the movement of the gate in case of failure and thus prevents a possible collision with some object. It is worth noting that gates larger than 9 m2 are equipped with such a mechanism as standard; in smaller models it must be purchased separately.
