Types of expanders

When choosing the right expander, it should be taken into account that there are different types of expanders and control panel models, as well as individual components of the entire system. This is because there is no universal expander that would fit every type of alarm system. We distinguish the following types of expanders:

input expander - a device whose task is to extend the functionality of the control panel with several (usually from 4 to as many as 8 programmable inputs) inputs. The input expander should be connected to one of the control panel's inputs, and other devices should be plugged directly into the expander's inputs.

Output expanders - that is, products whose main task is also to expand the functionality of the control panel, but in the context of additional outputs for effective control of various devices.

Addressing expander - this device works with different - but strictly defined - types of analog sensors and detectors. It is plugged into the signal line between the sensor and the control panel, which allows converting the detector from analog to addressable.

mechanical expander - connected under one of the inputs of the control panel, it can provide control functions for mechanical devices on the basis of received digital signals. The most common devices of this type include: expanders for smart card readers and controlling all kinds of bolts, catches or electromechanical locks. The operation of a mechanical expander is based on removing the signal analysis function from the control panel, and then transmitting information about the status of the task to the control panel.

audio expander - the equipment allows you to store several (usually 8 to 16) short audio messages, played in a situation defined by the operator.

When are input and output expanders useful?

As we have already mentioned, int-pp input and output expanders are devices that increase the functionality of a given alarm system component. The lack of a specific, useful function - for example, as a result of home expansion, change of equipment or replacement of a mechanical gate with an electric one or garden lighting - is a common problem when using an already installed alarm system.

Installation of input and output expanders is invaluable in the case of alarm systems with closed architecture, whose expansion is impossible, or - in the best case - very difficult. However, some alarm systems are designed in a way that allows easy expansion of its functionality.
