Product Description
Currently, the GL-PRO-6 paint meter comes in three versions:
- GL-PRO-6-F, probe on a wire with a ball, measurement only on steel sheets;
- GL-PRO-6-FA, probe on cable with ball, measurement on steel and aluminum sheets (automatic material recognition);
- GL-PRO-6-FAZ, probe on wire with ball, measurement on steel and aluminum sheets (automatic material recognition with function of detecting zinc coating on steel sheet).
GL-PRO-6 meters use a measuring probe on a cable. The probe is terminated with a so-called ball which facilitates measurement on curves. The meter has a measurement assistant® function, which is useful for measurements on cars.
GL-PRO-6 series meters are solutions based on modern 32-bit processors. This results in fast and accurate measurements realized with a 12-bit converter.
The meters use an innovative design of the measuring probe, which allows point measurement on ferromagnetic and non-magnetic materials (depending on the version), automatically recognizing the tested material and informing on the display about the type of material. The probe is terminated with a so-called ball.
A distinguishing feature of the GL-PRO-6-FAZ meters is the automatic recognition of whether the ferromagnetic sheet is covered with a layer of zinc or whether it is non-galvanized. This is of great importance when measuring on a car - it will reveal to us which body parts were replaced with cheaper ungalvanized ones. The probe was completely developed by us.
The meter has a calibration function on thickness standards (included in the set).
Detection of galvanized steel sheet - version GL-PRO-6-FAZ
The GL-PRO-6-FAZ paint thickness meter has a function to help detect the zinc layer on steel sheets. This is a useful function especially when looking for a used car. Quite often in cars after road traffic collisions, the entire body element, such as a fender, is replaced. Such an element if it is new and will be painted in accordance with the art, it is difficult to verify whether it is original or a replacement by only measuring the thickness of the paint - indications may show that the element is original factory. Counterparts of body parts produced by different companies are often not galvanized. Of course, in order to distinguish such an element, the rest of the car must be of galvanized steel, which will be detected by the meter (FeZn indication). For example, if you get a zinc indication on one fender and no such indication on the other, it may mean that the element was replaced.
When measuring on such galvanized steel, which the meter will be able to detect, the display will show FeZn or Fe+Zn, and when measuring on ungalvanized steel the display will show Fe.
What should you pay attention to?
The information on galvanized steel was introduced for measurement needs on car bodies and for measurements in other fields, but with the proviso that we know that the steel under test may be coated with zinc and not with another metallic compound with diamagnetic properties (e.g. copper, gold) or paramagnetic properties (e.g. aluminum), because in such a case the meter may also indicate FeZn information (and not, for example, Fe+Al, Fe+Cu). The meter detects a diamagnetic or paramagnetic layer applied to a steel plate.
It happens that the meter may not indicate FeZn information when measuring on metal sheets covered with an anti-corrosion layer that contains zinc elements - there are different methods of anti-corrosion protection involving zinc, and in some cases the meter may not detect a layer with zinc content. The meter may also fail to detect zinc spray applied to the sheet metal.
The meter will detect a layer of zinc if it is continuous, such as one made by immersion. A continuous layer of zinc is a coating done correctly. Below, on the left, a microscope photo of a correct zinc layer on steel - the meter will detect such zinc. On the right, a photo of a discontinuous, lumpy, defective zinc layer - the meter will not detect such zinc.
To sum up:
- making a measurement on steel without an additional diamagnetic or paramagnetic metallic layer, we will get the result of Fe;
- making a measurement on steel covered with zinc or other diamagnetic or paramagnetic metallic material, we will get the result FeZn;
- in some cases it may happen that corrosion protection containing zinc will not be detected, the zinc must be continuous;
- zinc spray may not be detected when applied to the sheet because it does not have a continuous structure;
- the meter may not detect zinc if the thickness of the paint along with the thickness of the zinc exceeds 300-350µm, then the indication will be Fe even though the steel may be galvanized.
It should be remembered that the indication of zinc on steel sheet is indicative, and if you have doubts about whether a car component should be galvanized, it is best to contact the car manufacturer for information.
It happens that the supplier of the car declares that the sheet metal is galvanized and the meter will not detect such a layer of zinc - from our research it seems that this is because the structure of the zinc is discontinuous (photo above right) - from the information consulted with the scientific staff, it seems that such a coating is a defective coating and does not properly perform its role. The advantage of the meter is that such a defective coating will simply not be detected by the meter.
The function of detecting zinc on steel sheet works up to a coating thickness including zinc thickness of about 300-350µm.
