IP protection classes - Degree of protection

Protection Class - IP (International Protection Rating) designation of equipment, consisting of two characteristic digits, such as IP68. Each digit indicates different degrees of protection against the ingress of solids, dust and water.
The first characteristic digit:
Digit | Degree of protection |
0 | no protection |
1 | protection against access to hazardous parts with the palm of the hand protection against foreign solids with a diameter of 50 mm or more |
2 | protection against access to dangerous parts with a finger protection against foreign solids with a diameter of 12.5 mm and greater |
3 | protection against access to dangerous parts with a tool protection against foreign solids with a diameter of 2.5 mm and greater |
4 | protection against access to hazardous parts with a wire protection against foreign solids with a diameter of 1 mm and greater |
5 | protection against access to hazardous parts by wire protection against dust |
6 | protection against access to hazardous parts by wire dustproof protection |
Second characteristic digit:

0 | without protection |
1 | Protection against falling drops of water |
2 | protection against falling water droplets when the housing is tilted by any angle up to 15° from the vertical in either direction |
3 | protection against splashing water at any angle up to 60° from the vertical on either side |
4 | Protection against splashing water from any direction |
5 | Protection against water jets (12.5 l/min) pouring on the housing from any side |
6 | Protection against powerful jets of water (100 l/min) pouring on the housing from any direction. |
7 | Protection against the effects of short-term immersion in water (30 minutes at a depth of 0.15 m above the top of the enclosure or 1 m above the bottom for enclosures lower than 0.85 m) |
8 | protection against the effects of continuous immersion in water (enclosure continuously immersed in water, under conditions agreed between the manufacturer and the user, but more severe than according to number 7) |
9 | Protection against flooding by a strong jet of water under pressure (80-100 bar and +80°C) according to DIN 40050 |
