DVB-T terrestrial television vs. DVB-T2

The new DVB-T2 standard is all about better bandwidth utilization (greater multiplex capacity) and much more efficient HEVC(High Efficiency Video Codec)/H.265 data compression, as DVB-T (i.e. the older terrestrial TV standard) allows about 24.88 Mbps to be transmitted in a single 8 MHz bandwidth, while DVB-T2 with the same bandwidth (8 MHz) allows up to 40 Mbps.

For the consumer, the most significant limitation of the DVB-T standard is the inability to transmit terrestrial TV channels in resolutions higher than HD (720p) and Full HD (1080p). With a much more efficient compression standard, DVB-T2 will make it possible to transmit more TV channels in a single multiplex. It will also be possible to transmit terrestrial channels that broadcast video in 4K/Ultra HD resolution.
