What is a generator set?

A generator set is an electrical power device that is a stand-alone power source. Generators are used to generate the electricity we need to run individual devices in case of overload or lack of access to another power source.

What does a generator set consist of?

A generator set consists of a synchronous generator (with electromagnets or permanent magnets), an internal combustion engine, an electrical switchgear and control, measurement and auxiliary equipment placed on a common metal structure. With this design, it can be confidently stated that generators are completely autonomous units for generating electricity.

What is a generator set used for?

A generator set is used to generate electricity for the operation of specific equipment, such as work tools, or as an emergency power source for the basic electrical system. Generators are indispensable when we need a source of electricity in a place where there is no possibility to connect to the existing power grid.

We use a generator set not only in non-electrified places, but also during grid failure. The genset provides at least several hours of operation of the connected device.

Types of generators

Generators are used in a great many facilities and areas. They are sometimes necessary to protect life (hospitals, airports), protect the environment (sewage treatment plants, manufacturing plants), protect facilities such as banks, hotels, gas stations, boarding houses or even private homes.

The large number of situations in which generators are used, and above all invaluable, determines a large number of criteria for the division of these devices, so there are numerous types of generators.

1) Division of generators - type of receiver - due to the type of power received:

  • resistive receivers - which include, among others, household appliances and rtv, lighting or electric heating,
  • inductive receivers - this group includes, for example, single and three-phase electric motors, power tools and transformers,
  • non-linear receivers - such as UPS, inverters and computer equipment.

To generate electricity, the generator itself needs a source of energy - it is a special battery or fuel, such as gasoline, oil or gas. With battery-powered generators, you get relatively low performance with low operating costs, the convenience of indoor use and a high level of safety. Fuel-powered generators provide much more energy - but they are noisier and generate a lot of exhaust fumes making it necessary to keep them out of enclosed spaces.

2) Types of generators by types of internal combustion engines:

  • four-stroke gasoline engines - similar to those installed in cars, which are characterized by stable and even operation. They fire up without problems even at low temperatures and are characterized by a high ratio of power to engine weight.
  • Two-stroke gasoline engines - represent a slightly archaic design. Although they are simple in construction and very robust, their operation is not very stable, which is reflected in the generated current. In addition, it is necessary here to use a mixture of fuel and oil for lubrication.
  • Diesel engines - that is, the most economical and very durable design. Characteristic here is the high torque and low fuel consumption, but it is difficult to start them at low temperatures.

3) Division of generators by phasing:

The difference here is in the design of the genset alternator. In generators of each type there are two winding elements - the so-called stator and rotor.

- Single-phase generators - the stator has one winding, the voltage of the generated current is from 1 to 230 V. They are used in powering, among other things, power tools, single-phase motors, electronic equipment, electric heating and household appliances, in short, single-phase gensets are used for all devices that can be connected to the home electric network.
- Three-phase gensets - the stator has three windings, and the voltage of the generated current reaches a magnitude of 3 to 400 V. Three-phase generators are most often used in powering three-phase motors, high-powered electric heating and advanced power tools.

4) Division of generators by mobility:

  • stationary generators - devices with great power, which are used primarily to power entire facilities in places with limited or no access to the electrical grid, as well as on board ships,
  • portable generators - more handy devices used mainly in emergency situations, such as at home. Thanks to them, we can maintain the operation of individual household appliances and installations (heating, alarm) during the time when we get access to the basic power grid again.
